Stephen

Stephen is a very happy and cheeky young man! When Stephen was a small child, his mother took him regularly for physiotherapy at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital until he became too heavy to carry the distance. She then heard of a specialist school and moved their family closer so she could enrol Stephen there.

Family First Ghana work in collaboration with Stephen’s school, Garden City Special School, and his family to advocate for his needs and build his therapy regime to promote his independence. Stephen is extremely feisty and motivated and with the right support we know he will continue to achieve in his own unique way.

Inspired by Stephen, we started a local project, making specialist disability equipment from bamboo. We first had parallel bars made for Stephen so that he could stand upright and practice independent walking. With Stephen’s determination, he soon picked this up and progressed to a posterior bamboo walking frame, with which he could walk around his home and explore the further surroundings.
