Afia

Afia is an inspiring young girl, who will always greet you with the biggest smile and warmest of hugs.

We found Afia in 2015, in a very sad situation, living alone on the streets away from her family due the stigma associated with her developmental disability. Family First Ghana offered extensive family support, working with Afia’s father to educate him on Afia’s needs and helping them to build a close family relationship. We connected with the local community where her father was living and it has been wonderful to see how Afia has been embraced into her new home. Afia’s father has excelled in the care of Afia now that he has increased understanding and a strong support system. With safe accommodation and a loving family environment, Afia is now thriving.

We supported Afia’s father to identify an appropriate school for Afia ~ a specialist government school which trains young people and adults in vocational skills and trades. Afia has recently discovered a love of beading and her teachers will teach her to make bracelets, necklaces, bags and flip flops from her beading. She experiences some challenges with hand eye co-ordination, but this does not seem to be holding Afia back and we have no doubt that with her motivation and determination she will soon be able to make many wonderful designs. Afia has said she would like to be a business woman and we think this is an exciting endeavour for her!

Through a monthly sponsorship, we can ensure that Afia and her father continue to have a safe home and Afia has access to nutritional meals and appropriate care at home, whilst also funding her specialist education.
