Family First is a charitable organisation that is passionate about supporting families who have children with complex medical needs and disabilities in Kumasi, Ghana.
Abdul Hamid
Abdul Hamid is a young, cheeky boy with a wonderful smile. He has three older siblings and loves being surrounded by his peers.
When we initially met Abdul Hamid, he was malnourished and unable to sit or stand alone. After one year of intensive outreach physiotherapy at Abdul Hamid’s home and through dietary support, we are overjoyed to see that he has now fully caught up in his physical development. He is able to stand, walk, run and jump alongside his friends.
This meant that we were able to work with Abdul Hamid’s family to identify a small, supportive private school where we could enrol Abdul Hamid. Abdul Hamid is currently in Kindergarten 2. He loves joining in with nursery rhythms and class activities, as well playing with his friends at breaktime. However, Abdul Hamid is a shy and reserved young boy and his speech development remains delayed with a limited vocabulary and he finds it hard to speak in situations where he is less familiar.
Abdul Hamid is currently receiving regular speech and language therapy and additional support to aid his social and emotional development. Abdul Hamid’s family are actively engaged in his therapy and support him with interventions. At present, we believe that Abdul Hamid has a global development delay, but we continue to monitor his progress and regularly update his care plan.
Abdul Hamid provides wonderful evidence that early interventions are effective and important!! Family First Ghana strives to increase awareness of disability so that more children have earlier access to therapeutic interventions and education to give them the best start in life, just like Abdul!
